Your help gives us hope! July 25, 2011
Dear Friends and Family,
I am extremely proud to tell you that on Sunday, July 24, 2011, the Gals for Cal successfully completed our third Triathlon together! It was an incredible event for all of us; exciting, exhilarating, emotional and exhausting!!
The months of training leading up to the big day and the time away from our families to do it was no easy feat. The Gals learned how to swim a half mile when water temperatures were less than ideal. They endured a 12 mile bike ride on a very hilly course where they say more than half the riders would eventually have to walk up! And immediately after the swim and bike, they ran 3 miles on a slightly rolling hilly course. They did this along with 1,300 other racers all on a warm and overcast New England summer day!
Crossing the finish line was in fact incredibly satisfying as well as very emotional! Calvin, along with his siblings was there to give the Gals a finishing hug and Gals medal . The highlight of my race was crossing the finish line holding both Calvin and his sister Emily's hands. Now we know why they say that “the women who start this race are not the same women that finish it!”
With your support, the Gals for Cal team accomplished our goals! First, to physically survive and finish the Triathlon! Second, to create a greater awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). (Our team has grown from the original 20 Gals 2009 to over 85 this year!) Lastly, we raised much needed funds to support research to help the boys affected with DMD to live longer and healthier lives. We are very grateful for the generosity of our supporters. So far this summer, we have raised over $37,000 for DMD research and clinical care! We are very near our 3 year cumulative fundraising goal of $100,000. The Gals For Cal are very proud to say that collectively our fundraising efforts for DMD have totaled over $88,000 in a 3-year period and we are still adding to that!
Your support has created a momentum that we cannot deny! The Gals are already setting next year’s goals to include increasing the size of our team yet again. The Gals truly are “livin’ large” as Cal would say!
On behalf of my family, the Jett Foundation, all the boys living with DMD, and all the Gals for Cal, thank you for your tremendous support and generosity! We could not have accomplished all of this without you!
Your help gives us hope!
